I wish WRX transmissions were as strong as the SRT 4's...well...at least I never heard any SRT 4 owner claim them to be weak!

i don't know why the poster a few up keeps saying the mag article compares a 02 wrx when it clearly states it's a 05.
i've actually owed a 02 wrx, srt4 and a 04 sti. and your right when it comes to how cars feel when driving them. and the feed back they give the driver when going around turns. i'll agree the sti feels better to drive then my srt ever did even with tons of suspension mods. but to blindly say there incapable of making turns is just plain wrong.
after my built motor blew up i decided it wasn't worth the money to fix the car again. so i parted it out and bought a sti only because i got it so cheap. i was actually looking for a ls2 gto. but this one fell into my lap for barely $15k.
my srt made those whp numbers on a stock 5spd and stock axles. fwiw.

all i can say it that they are both in their own way awesome cars!!one of my friends owned an srt-4 with 420 whp mostly for street use. With that much power you couldn't do any kind of street pulls under third gear. Literally impossible to get full performance until 3rd as far as hp and acceleration in a straight line because of wheel hop.
Another thing for the OP and your friend talking about racing and him saying that launches shouldn't decide a race. Every professional race is started from a stop.(correct me if there is something out there that involves you to already be rolling) So yes the launch does matter in a real race sporting event. whether it's the hole shot for position, or a .01 off your 1/4" mile. Launches are necessary!!
Both cars are great performance 'manimals'!
but definitely don't doubt the handling capabilities of a FWD car. It's just a new way of learning to drive. It's just like dirt bikes. 2 wheel will not be driven the same as 4 wheel, but they can still keep the same paces. It comes down to driver experience and knowing how the vehicles react.
My .02
Again correct me if i'm wrong on any of thisalways open to learn new things.

Well...NASCAR and Indy/Cart racing is all done from a roll...but i'm just being picky.
You make a valid point....launches DO matter. People who don't benefit from a launch (i.e. FWD drivers) will claim that they don't, while those who do benefit from it (i.e. AWD drivers) will claim that it does matter.
Launch/traction always matters IMO...but a lot of times those who dont have the $ or sense to work on suspension (or their cars are simply a worse design for traction) will claim its pointless.
Give the SRT-4 credit for being an absolute monster when it comes to numbers with a few bolt ons. Give the WRX credit for launching better and more consistently. If you give both cars the same #'s (as far as WHP and TQ), the WRX probably wins most of the time (especially on a dig).
now, everybody, lets quit the **** measuring and enjoy our cars![]()

I haven't ever launched my car in the seven years I've had it. Guess that AWD stuff was a waste after all.![]()

I guess I should have qualified my statement by saying "for some boy racers, launches are important..."
But c'mon, we all like to live in fantasyland sometimes and bench race our cars, even if we don't ever do it in the real world. AWD obviously has benefits beyond "launch".

Oh, that is what it is for? Kind of like my ALK I suppose then
But seriously, I had a great time in the 200sx - very light nimble FWD car with no potential for torque steer. I assume this might be a little bit of fun too:

Holy crap, great find, John!
There are any number of wonderful 2WD options out there...the AWD snobbery gets a bit silly, what with the "OMG my car can do high 13's...but never mind that in normal driving conditions where I don't launch it like a dragster it really accelerates like a 15-second car..." and stuff.
