    im curious

so recently i raced a couple of my friends.

1st race (20mph-70mph): 2006 sti stock cobb ap tune- it was literally dead even

2nd race was against an 05 wrx with cobb ots stage 2 map and an intake- i beat him 3 times by about 2 car lengths each time. the races were a 20 roll, a 30 roll, and a 40 roll.

I drive an 07 wrx tr with a turboback exhaust, perrin short ram intake, and a perrin lightweight crank pulley. im not tuned yet ( i know, its a necessity with turboback exhaust, im getting one soon) I thought that both of those cars would easily pull on me but somehow they didn't. Im just curious how my car is so fast without a tune, and how i kept up with an sti..?

    does that sound right?

You need to be tuned for both the exhaust and the intake. Stay completely out of boost and reinstall the stock intake until you get tuned.

Driver error. Both cars should have pulled on you.

It's not the turbo-back you have to worry about. The intake without a tune is a serious threat to your engine's longevity.

He does need an tune for the exhaust due to a OL/CL fuel delay.

Then maybe they're "good", and your just way better. I can't see your car doing that well against them otherwise (especially w/o a tune).

I should have been more clear. Sure, the exhaust needs a tune but swapping intakes without a tune can kill the engine in minutes. Of the two, the intake is clearly the more risky untuned mod.

I do my own tuning w/ RomRaider and I'm quite familiar with the particulars.

That's a little bit of an exaggeration.

I don't want to risk my engine to the ECU's knock control strategy. No MAF input is far better than an incorrect MAF input.

Put on a 3 inch MAF housing and go full throttle without a tune and it's your ring lands, not mine.

    + Seriously.

Put an SPT, K&N Typhoon, or APS SRI on and tell me your car is going to explode in minutes.

On a bone stock car the ECU may compensate enough. Try it with a canned Stage 2 tune and all bets are off.

We all know the SPT is junk (odd resonances) and the K&N is livable in most cases.

Laugh all you want at screwing with the car's single most important method of determining engine load, fueling, and timing. I'll bet you're the same ones who'd scream bloody murder at the thought of someone using a MBC without a tune.

BTW, it doesn't matter what brand housing you have if it's tuned. I run a $12 Spectre MAF housing on my car. It's dialed in perfectly. Go pay $150+ for an 8-inch pipe with a hole in it if you want to.
