Nice, I had a VR for the C6(different design) I got rid of it over warping concerns. I don't think the C5 has that problem.

Didn't that air previously feed the radiator? Won't it contribute to overheating?

The underside of the c5z06 has a big hole under it in the front - like an intake slot which feeds the slanted radiator. Those two small holes in the front don't do much. I looked online but couldn't find pictures of a c5 on a lift. I'll get some pictures next time it's on the lift.... hopefully this Sunday.
Here's a picture of what it looks like on a C6 - but it's pretty close to how it looks on the c5.

Have that on our C5 with a new MAF (screen-less), cf large inlet tube (between vararam and intake manifold)...
The Vararam is a great design for high speed, but I didn't notice an ounce of difference off of the line. Now at 80-90 mph, you could definitely feel the difference. It sounds pretty cool too.
Install went well. Drove about 50 miles today. Oddly enough it seems to have changed the exhaust tone under throttle a little bit, certainly pulls a little harder (more so above 40-50mph)- and it wasn't like it didn't pull pretty hard in the first place.
I know I said I wasn't going to mod it. I said the same thing about my WRX. Come springtime - I think I'll be looking at ARH headers, x-pipe, high flow cats, and a tune. After that - lots of research to pick a route between n/a and f/i. N/A costs more, but I like the idea of all motor 500whp and the LS6 should be up to the task. On the other hand, a supercharger kit will put down 530whp for nearly two-thirds the price of N/A.

I've been in a similar situation as you for the past year or so, while I think I've decided on staying NA and just shooting for around 500whp, until I pull the trigger I'm still on the fence.
I see FI as never ending where as with NA there's a ceiling if you still want to be able to DD your car. ~500whp will still be fine on streetable tires without going widebody, probably can survive without another grand in gauges, no futzing with a boost a pump and fueling, can probably get away without having to buy a wb02. . .etc..
WHat are blowers running for C5's? You'd be hard pressed to get into one for < 5K in a C6(unless used).
New supercharger kits are around 6k-8k, used kits are around 3-4k.
But The Vette Doctors Inc. - Home Page has a supercharger kit installed and tuned for $6495. I am thinking about heading out there come spring for their $1895 deal (ARH headers, high flow cats, x-pipe, installed and dyno tuned).
All motor power is honestly the direction I would rather go. I've already got a F/I AWD with my subie, N/A RWD seems like a nice alternative.

I still see FI as having a higher ceiling than NA. . . Though with the LS3's people are cutting 9's with bolt on sc's. .. still not the route I want to go.
intake, headers, cam, double roller, pushrods, rockers, thermostat, dual springs
Your list for 500sh would be the same but with heads, no? . . that doesn't seem like it would be much more expensive than a used sc, depending on your choice of heads. . . though with labor I can see it spiking.
