This EVO is not rice! The differences? (a) Provenance. (b) Homologated. (c) Originality. It did the fender flares and square wing stock, from the works, in... 1990. Heck, it even had a fire extinguisher stock, fitted on the footwell on the front right. Merc 190E 2.5-16 Evo.![]()

It's just what it means, a more evolved version derived from an original model. The use of "Evolution" to describe a model is decades old. Think of it as analogous to "L" or "GT" or "S" in model designations, or what Ford would call "MkII" or "MkIII" (even though Ford themselves were about to lose the "Mk" designation from the Escorts and use "Evolution" for the RS200 apparently). It's just a model designation and it has been used on road or tarmac cars as well as rally cars.
Companies that have used it (and big wings and fender flares) before Mitsubishi are numerous as you've listed. They include Ferrari, Lancia, Peugeot, Mercedes...
Where the Japanese are, um, well, let's call it original, is in using the term "Evolution" for a car that is not intended for homologation, is not homologated, and/or does not have motorsport provenance. They started this when they withdrew from competion but kept selling Lancer Evolution models (and why not -- the dreaded "tuner" scene in the US was worth a mint). To be fair, those Evolution models made while Mitsu stayed home were used in regional Group N competition, but as far as I can tell not by works teams.

Example: Evo version Ferrari 288 GTO. This image is copyrighted by G. Jones. I believe Niki Lauda bought one of these cars (Cav, am I correct?) and there is work here that was used in the F40. This car is from the late 1980s, and predates any Lancer "Evo" by over a decade.

1- a subaru impreza wrx sti evolution (not to mention the numbers that would be eventually added) is a ridiculously long name
2- STi to me seems more desireable like an ///M car to BMW, or an AMG to Mercedes (even thought they did have an evo), or S to Audi
3- EVOLUTION sounds, IMO more like a type R, or Type S kind of name.

Subaru do other weird things. Example: the most expensive, hand made, highly evolved Imprezas were not STi cars. They were WRX cars. This is because for some reason (probably just practical) the full Group A/8, works backed WRC cars used WRX (not WRX STi) chassis codes.
Funny enough, less evolved chassis like the Group N cars are STi cars as per chassis code.
I don't know if that was maintained from beginning to the end of the motorsport programme but it was in fact the case during their best IMO years.

This would fit in line with the "WRX" = "World Rally Experiment" though. Subaru is a weird duck on the pond.
