    No Thanks

So i went for a drive the other day up i70 from denver to the tunnel to get a feel for altitudes affects on the car. Anyway bout 10min outside denver i see a cool car ahead so i get over and acceralte to see. Its a Mercedes Benz Sl 65 AMG. I look over and its a "butter face" lady. Shes smiled and punches it and the car flys up the hill. My guess is she was on her way back to her Aspen ski Mansion.
I like to play with my car but i would atleast like to have a chance.... my rex vs. v12 displacement. NO thanks.
Just thought i'd share the story...ahh good times

ummm... I beat one of those 2 weeks ago.
I beat a brand new M3 last week too... Got a thumbs up for that one from the driver
The AMG driver gave me a middle finger though... ass hole.

At bandimere, I managed better times than a C6, Evo X, and a Lexus ISF as well.

All of which are cars that should have been close, or beaten me.

It's depressing the amount of drivers that waste money on a fast car just to not know how to drive it!

I'd bet good money she had no clue how to drive that AMG, and you could've beat her if you know how to drive your car well and played from a stop light.

Back on topic... Did you notice how big of a difference altitude makes?! It's absolutely crazy.

Definitely should have gone for it.

Worse case she smokes you and you can say "ehhh, it was a v12 AMG, what did I expect".

Best case, her driving is as butter as her face and you take her and can say "see, I beat a v12 AMG, what did I expect"...lol

Would driving skill really be a large factor from her side of things? Aren't all of the big AMG cars 7-speed automatics?

Excerpt from Official AMG User's Manual
Instructions for properly accelerating from any speed:

    Press gas pedal to floor.

sure...throw "fact" into the equation...sheeesh. Ruin the fun for everyone

haha...seriously though, if she was a bad enough driver and just slammed the gas down, she could spin herself into ditch no?? I guess on some minute level it would factor in...but probably not enough to matter.

A Mercedes, spin itself into a ditch? I'm sure its HIDAS (hyper intelligent ditch avoidance system) would prevent that.

    My brother's CL65 AMG:

There are quite a few AMG models but none as quick as the 65 series. The 55's are quick enough with their roots-blown v8. The 65's are downright evil with 6.0 liters of v12 displacement plus 22 psi of boost (turbos, not a blower). We're talking 121 - 122 mph traps in bone stock form. You'll need a bit more than a VF39 to outrun that.

Ray is right about the acceleration technique. You don't disable the traction control -- it allows the optimum amount of wheelspin as long as the car is pointed straight. It shifts at the right times. There's no such thing as lag either; you get big-displacement throttle response right until the peak torque hits at 2k rpm and holds through 4k. You simply hold the pedal down until you no longer see your opponent. It doesn't take long.

The v12 cars have "only" the 5spd auto because it's the only one that can hold the power. With that kind of power band you don't need the extra gears anyway.

It's going to take every bit I can eek out of my new setup to even keep this car in view. From a dig I'll be closer thanks to the limitation of the Benz's 275-width tires but after that it will get interesting.

I misread Gunny... it was a 55 I raced not a 65. But If they're auto's, and it's just "gas and go" I'm curious how I beat this guy!

Well i haven't been called a bad driver yet but that doesn't mean im good. +1 From a light i would have a much better shot than from a 65mph roll.

By the time i got to the tunnel it felt like a completely different car. All the same sounds but just less go.. still quick though.

AMG 65 = 195,000 msrp... doubt youll be seeing much of them around

AMG 55 = 89,000ish I think.. both cars are pretty rare to worry about

Scoots pretty well for a 4900 lb. car.
