    they are both slow... but between the 2 I'd take the 2.5.

    a quick google search reveals the following specs:

    98 RS: 137 hp, 2825 lbs.
    06 2.5i: 173 hp, 2972 lbs (sedan/manual transmission)

    a little math shows the lbs/hp:

    98 RS: 20.62 lbs/hp
    06 2.5i: 17.18 lbs/hp

    so it looks like, in a straight line, the 06 2.5i would be a bit faster.

    I don't think those numbers are accurate. The 2.5RS had 165 hp. I'm less sure about the curb weight but I don't believe it was that high either.

    1999 RS standard features
    Phase II 2.5L engine 165 HP, 166 Torque @4000 rpm (same engine as 99 Forester)

    my mistake, i read the chart wrong. that was for the engine in the L. the RS does have 165 hp. curb weight was correct.

    so that makes the 98 RS 17.12 lbs/hp. so they're quite close.

    You're also forgetting that the 98 Rs has a 4.11 final drive while the 06's are running 3.90's. Easily the 98 would win. Stock I ran a 15.4 with my 99'. With equal drivers the Rs's will always have the edge from gearing and weight.

    The "who's faster" question should also be applied to handling, where I believe the lighter, more nimble GC8 would stand out.
