The GT500 is more than just the STI of mustangs. You also forget it has the shelby moniker on it which costs more by itself, it is what it is, if Ford makes money off of it, but the thinking is it will be worth boatloads because it says Shelby on it. If you can find me another car with 500 HP within $10,000.00 of the sticker price of a GT500 I will acknowledge your argument that Ford should have made it cheaper, until then it is null and void, and it is less than $20,000 more than regular GT. You get a lot with the GT500 like the bigger engine with the blower on it, and much much more. The difference between the STI and the WRX is not nearly as much as the difference between the GT and GT500, and the prices reflect that. I feel that for the sticker price of the GT500, you get more car than anything else that is available near it's price point, along with more potential for modding and HP gains, as well as sick suspension options.
How much are the 08 STIs MSRP (I honestly don't know)? I thought I heard they would be in the $38000 range (but like I said, I have no clue).

I do think there is a unfair bias going with Edmunds staff, a wrx and a regular GT would made a better comparison more of a equal in terms of performance vs. price vs. comfort features. The 03-04 cobra's were of a platform design of 1979 and were finally put to rest, somewhat sad though.
The ONLY resemblance of the Shelby and the GT500 is the name. The Shelby gt is a dressed up Gt while the GT500 has stronger body construction, bigger motor with S/C and six speed and body mods. p.s. the hood openings are real on the gt500
I showed this video to a co-worker that owns a 07 mustang v-6 and he still said he would buy the Shelby over the STI...even though he *****es about driving to work when theres a 1/4 inch of snow on the ground.
