wait, i'm confused. am I right or not?

well currently, i dun have any EMs or anything on my car.
Just running perrin catback and short ram + gutted downpipe.
coming back from school today around 10:30'ish @ PM.
I was stopped @ red light.
A dude in a red GTI stopped right next to me.
I didn't really care, because I didn't really have intention of racing him
or anything, but i heard the bov from his car, as soon as he took off hard.
kinda tempted me, and he waited for me @ next light, how nice...
so we take off, both were kinda even til I hit the 2nd gear, I gained about
2 car length on him and after I entered 4th gear, I stopped.
I thought GTI 1.8t were fast...Or Did I just hear wrong story from others?
I'm just confused, because the GTI seemed to be pretty hard worked on car, too.
it was lowered, exhaust, and bov. I don't know much things about VW, so
i dunno if it was chipped or not ( didn't even have had chance to ask him, he just
    made right turn and left.)

1.8t gti suppose to be fast or no? I was surprised on my rex's improvement
after I got perrin catback. I was running on greddy type-s bov + genome catback
til 2 weeks ago, I recently changed to perrin catback and it was first my first time
actually taking off fast. I didn't launch or anything, I just started off fast.
    so any inputs?

not a big surprise, those 1.8t have a lot of potential, but they need a lot of help to get big power out of them

plus on the street, there are lots of other variables to take into consideration too, the driver being the biggest
k&n, sti-hoodscoop, engine mounts, & tranny mount, blitz dtt, catless up-pipe, samco ic hose, greddy CC, cusco f/r swaybars, gutted midpipe, oil cooler, prodrive exhaust & f/r replica sti strut tower bar, gunmetal rota tarmac, goodridge ss lines, p'n'p exhaust manifold

    deny the fly-by

Must have been the BOV which is a turbo killer, especially if the release opening is small enough such that it makes the pshh sound.

While the GTi 1.8T can be made fast, it is not fast stock. Your car is probably running very low 14's or maybe even high 13's if you can driver. A stock GTi is only going to be pulling off lower 15's. The good part about the GTi is that you can make good power with mods like intake, exhaust, chip which will put you in the solid mid-lower 14's... So that explains why you stayed ahead by 2 cars.
Had you ran out 4th gear he probably would have made up ground, and if you went from a roll you probably would have lost against an i/e/c GTI.

If the GTi isnt chipped via APR, REVO, Etc, its not very fast at all, low 15's for the most part.

The stock turbos on those 1.8T's are too small to be called a monster regardless of mods. You can get them ino the high 13's with a good chip/intake/exhaust combo but thats about it on the stock turbo. Plus even with all those mods their torque falls off quick, so they dont do as well as one would think from a roll. My friends GTI 1.8T with chip and intake would pull slightly on me when I was stock from a roll, all it took was a turboback and it was GTI. Stock my buddy's GTI pulled a 15.4 best, after the chip and intake he hit a best of 14.3...

If you can launch you should have a pretty deffinate win from a dig, if hes modded or not. If he's moded it will probably be close from a roll, if you start from lower than 3rd gear you should have enough to hold him off till at least 90-100. if you started a rolling race from 3rd or 4th gear (like a 65+mph roll...) he migh win, short of that I wouldnt worry much if hes close to stock. Stock they're low to mid 15 second cars and trap in the low 90's. The VR6 doesnt take quite as well to mods as a turbo car will either, so if hes only running the usual intake and catback it will still be very close from a roll.

Either way just race him and find out, that will be the only way to know for sure.

Umm i don't think a modded vr6 could even stay close to a stock wrx. My best friend has a 97 jetta vr6 with i/e/ch and i still pulled him by at least 6 or 7 car lengths from a roll. Now at stage 2 tuned, i put about 3-4 bus lengths on him.

VR6's aren't all that quick with i/e/c, but turbo'd they're MONSTERS. Luckily most VW-ers care a lot about looks, so most look way faster than they are, but if you run into one (either a 1.8t or a VR6) with a larger turbo on it, watch out. From a roll, they're definitely trouble.

Just chipped, eh, quick, but I wouldn't worry too much.
