the 3 is a car that on paper, you would never consider, but end up falling in love with it anyway. there isn't a single owner of a 3 that doesn't absolutely love it.

the interior was such a refreshing change from the WRX: very Audi-like in fit, finish, and feel. the ride/handling compromise is BMW-like. Even when I had 225/45-17's on my WRX, I can go the exact same speed around corners in the 3, yet the ride is infinitely smoother. Handling wise, I feel like I got ripped off with the WRX.

Power is merely adequate, but I love being able to cruise at 1500rpm. It has variable valve timing, and you can actually pass someone at 1500rpm, where the WRX is simply a dog. basically the only time the WRX felt faster was when I was flooring it.

I also love the styling of my 5-door. much sexier than WRX wagons.

The 5-speed is simply *awesome*. snickety snick, short throws, precise, don't have to worry about it blowing up, and butter smooth. much, much, better than the clunky 5 speed in the WRX. you'll never need a short shifter in this car. The steering wheel is straight out of the RX-8 and kicks major ass.

The only thing I miss from the WRX is the added security of AWD, and that boxer rumble. otherwise, the 3 kicks major ass.

Nice. The handling on the MSP was what sold me. I'm not thrilled with worrying whether the motor is going to let go on me one day, but it's held up well and I drive it hard. Bolt-ons like exhaust and intake give it decent power and, as you mentioned, it feels faster than it is. It's edgy and rides slightly rough, but Oh Boy does it grip... The stereo stomps too.

mazdas are garbage to me now. They are built in the same plant as fords. I would love to get an RX-8 over a rex any day, beautiful guages, great interior, great exterior, adequate power for me, but they have so many problems, and i hate unreliable cars, i rather spend my money on mods

1 person, yes, 1 person has gotten close to the mag times of 14.5 on RX-8club. Most people stock run high 14s and low 15s are even more common than the high 14s. I personally have seen at least 3 different RX-8s at the track and not a single one dipped into the 14s.

I don't see the big argument. Who'd buy an RX8 and worry about what their 1/4 times are anyways? It's a momentum car, built to maintain speed through corners, not a drag racer. I've driven a 6-speed. It's a mid 14 second car at best, but its not slow enough to be in the 15's. Maybe if the person just learned a manual tranny.

The Auto's with 197hp are in the 15's....those really suck.

+1 except for the 15 second 1/4 on the auto.... they arent even that fast i dont think.

Its useless telling Ike its more of a handling car, since he posts on the rx8 forum also and thats the response they usually give.

I really like the RX8's, though I usually like cars that beat to their own tune. Of course I also have more fun glueing my passengers faces to the side windows while cornering than I do blasting down a straight away anyways, so that probably says something.

I think any car you can rev to 9000rpm is a damn cool piece of machinery. ;-)

Mazda 3's are built in Hiroshima. They do a lot of parts sharing, but Mazda's level of QC is 10x better than Ford's. Look at the Protege/3 vs. the Focus/Escort. Lots of parts sharing on those cars: the Mazda's are a hoot to drive and reliable...and the others are Fords.

just to comment, i think i read in car and driver couple months ago where they have cheap speed comparo with the wrx, rsx, cobalt ss, ion redline, and srt-4, (wrx came in second behing the rsx type s ) they had a long term rx8 which went faster as it got more broken in. brand new, the 0 60 time was like 6.7, but after like 30k miles, it droped to like 5.9 . i'm pretty sure of it. however, rx8s are definitely not for hp freaks. the mazda dudes squeezed every last bit of horsepower out of those rotary engines and like $2k in mods will only net like 20hp, unlike a wrx . i was lucky enough to drive my dad's for awhile though before getting my wrx, i just have to say that it had the sweetest 6 throw shifter. it was so easy to change gears, and the throws were short and smooth and it revs soooo easily and lightly. but wrx>rx8 in almost every other way.

btw, here's a link for the rx8 article at car and driver.
