Your RPM killed you on that. It's likely he had the Works package with 200 hp, possibly modified (if you heard the exhaust it was modded), and was probably also a good driver. A friend of mine has a modded Cooper S and I showed him peak torque in his car and now he can make it really scream, though it still isn't as fast as my STi in a straight line. They also weigh something like 2600 pounds. All those factor together for a nasty lead on you right away.
