    WRX AUTO vs. DSM AUTO

me and my friend had a little friendly competition about an hour ago. i raced my wrx automatic while he raced his eclipse gs-t auto. we raced off the line, and he got me maybe a tire length, but i came right back and we were neck to neck.

    his mods:
bov, K&N fipk, test pipe 2.5 inches, racing muffler, ngk, plugs & wires, and a few free dsm mods.

    my mods:
    3" catback exhaust, racing muffler.

i broke torque to about 1500rpms, and then let it go. according to him, it was his best launch that he ever had and broke torqued to about 2500rpms. he ran his car at the track and ran a 14.9, but without testpipe and intake.

the largest advantage that this guy had that helped him keep up was his test pipe. he had just a muffler and exhaust pipe, no cat or anything. he said that it help his turbo lag decrease about 500rpms.

the stock turbo (unless you are talking first generation dsm) on the 2nd Gen (95-99) is too small, it can not hold 16 lbs of boost. It may spike to that but than it will go down to 12 or 10 psi. With the test pipe now I am able to hold 14psi steady with a spike to 15 lbs, which before I couldnt do, and obviously the guy you raced couldnt either looking at his mods. Oh yeah, and when I say steady, it stays 14 psi only to about 5500 rpm. It shifts at 6400 rpm and by then its down to 10 psi.

I just cant wait two - three more months, when I drop in the Big 16g turbo with 550cc injectors and 255lph fuel pump. Tunning this sucker is going to be a pain in the azz but can you say 17+ lbs of boost all the way to the red line. I hear its not good to run higher on street fuel, but hey, 17 psi is plenty.

In case you havent figured out, I'm the friend he is talking about
