do not neglect the fact that DSM's are not the most reliable cars out there. Easy to make fast, and able to handle tons of power? yes.
But very few people purchase a used DSM without expecting a decent deal of reliability problems.

True, but that's the result of the previous owner cutting corners and neglecting maintanance. It's not like they fall apart, losing pieces as they age. This is especially true now that most owners are in high school. I started in 1992, and I've had at least 8 DSMs including a Galant VR4 and an 89 Mirage turbo, plus 2 Stealths.
