Smile Cheap way to hardwire your Escort 8500 X50

*this is my first write up so please tell me how to improve it
Thanks to SVT Amateur for the method

This mod is virtually free, aside from the phone cord, and the connectors
Comparison Regular telephone cord: left, smart cord: right

*Note you will lose the smart cord mute function*

First get a regular telephone cord

Then remove the map lights, use a flat head screw driver to get the clear plastic piece on your map-lights, then unscrew the two philips head screws, and un-plug it.

Cut off one end, and cut some of the insulation off of the cord

run it through you headliner to the area near the rear-view mirror

Un-plug the the auto dimming mirror(if equipped) and locate the Yellow and Black wires. Yellow being power, and Black being ground, please note that other years may be different(the actual plug is not pictured) The image is of the plug that goes to the mirror. I used this plug to vampire clip the wires. The power on the phone cord is the RED and the ground is the GREEN. I had a very hard time getting the vampire clip to work on that small of a wire, so I used some other wire and crimped them together then using the larger wire, vampire clipped the power and ground on the harness

This is after wiring up the phone cord, and pluging the harness back in

2nd put 1 wire into the clip

3rd put the 2nd wire in the clip

4th crimp the pin in to the wires(not pictured)

5th put the retainer clip on.

I'm trying to do this, but I don't have the auto dimming mirror what do I do? I've got the plastic off right not and the only wires I see are those going to the dome lights (and I'm assuming the domelights are not switched, and that they only have power when the button is pressed?). Anyone have any suggestions?

You might actually have the wire up there. In this writeup (granted it's for an 08 STI), he says that it is way up underneath by the visor.
