Possibly buying a "salvage" 2002 WRX

    Hi guys,

First post - looking for a bit of advice.

I found a local small dealer who is selling a modified 2002 WRX with over 175,000 miles and a salvage title. The dealer claims the salvage title is due to hail damage, which is evident on the body of a car. I understand that it's possible to total out a car, especially if the value of the repair exceeds the (probably lowest) value. And I assume a decent paint shop would probably charge in the realm of this cars non-salvage value. The dealer claims he's had it looked at and it needs an O2 sensor (he said it runs rich and smokes at start up) but has no knocks/bangs from the engine. I will be driving it this Saturday.

So, given the high mileage, salvage title, and the most-likely abused engine, would you guys pay less than $3000 for it? Is it worth it if I plan to drop another $3000 into it? I'm not afraid of an engine swap, and it's purely a project car.

    Thanks guys!

(also I used to have a 2010 WRX that I traded for a family car Worst decision EVER)

You alone are able to decide how much a project car is worth.

If $6k is your budget, get the car for as cheap as humanly possible, and then assume you'll sink the rest of your budget getting it running. Double your budget to actually make it a "toy".

The only safe assumption here is that your budget will never be high enough.
