    Thank Goodness for CARFAX!!

I am shopping for WRX wagon, and I've got up to $11,000 to spend. So, I found a great deal around 4 hour drive from my house... its a dealer in Louisville, KY. They have a lot of nice cars for sale... the WRX, BMW's, other high end imports.
The WRX is a 2005, 1 owner, with 64,000 miles and they are asking $10,995. That is great mileage, and the pictures look good. Normal advertisement for a "Very Nice 1 Owner WRX..."

They didn't have a carfax, but some other history report they say is good and clean. Well, for some reason I went ahead and spent $50 on some prepaid carfax reports and looked up the VIN.

You know what? Thank God I did.

This car was flooded in NJ in late 2012, and the mileage reported to NJ DMV in October or Nov was 163,000 miles!!!!
So, I call the dealer to see what the story is... um, well, yeahh.... not much water in it when we got it and the odometer says 64,000 miles.. and um. They should be asking $2000 for this car, and they know it.

Anyway, get the carfax. $50 is a helluva lot less than what I was getting ready to spend.

    Whew!

As soon as I read the first few sentences and saw the bit about them having lots of nice cars for sale I instantly started to think "salvage dealership" haha.

Can't you/shouldn't you report the dealer for not disclosing that?

Good save. A lot of cars that were damaged during Sandy are being sold on the lots. I believe there is a website where you can check to see if these cars were reported as flood damaged.

    Good check!

There certainly were tons of cars flooded out from Sandy out here which is sad. I wouldn't doubt if it could have been rebuilt with a used engine swapped in. There are services out there that can adjust the mileage on the cluster legally as well. But the fact being that the dealership doesn't seem to know anything about that is a red flag.

Obviously one to walk away from in either case. You don't want a car that was previously flooded.
