I see no reason to believe that author is an expert either.

There are no data to support a manufacturer conspiracy or secret regarding break in.

There are no data to support wear trends or consumable consumption trends increasing if the manufacturer's procedure is followed vs. a guru's "procedure" (I'm being kind by using both "guru" and "procedure").

There are no data to support increased motor longevity or output if a special guru break in procedure is followed and the manufacturer ignored.

If something cannot be proven it is unlikely science. At best it's philosophy. Are philosophers good motor designers? Are they good mechanics, in case you follow their advice and need one?

Instead of data, the main argument by the gurus is "I said so" and "I know better." That, and repetition.

If you can find a guru with a great insider break in trick and she or he is willing to guarantee your motor for 59.999,00 miles just like the manufacturer then go for it... Your motor, your call.

Yes I'd agree with mikie and sd_gr on that. I can tell you that I have met several Subaru engineers in my career with Subaru, and their knowledge was nothing short of incredible, these guys know what they are doing. I would follow the recommended break in procedure as stated in the owners manual regardless of the reason they call for it, its only 1500 miles after all and the last thing you want is a big problem with your engine...

    Hi rex,

I'm about to finally pull my trigger on a base wrx with some addons soon. Ive been talking to several dealerships around my area and someone quoted me invoice. However, that car is missing somethings I want to have such as a spoiler and fog lights. They said they could install those things for me but I would have to pay labor. My question is; how do dealer installed parts compare with fresh off the truck cars? Are they exactly the same? And.. how forgiving do you think the dealer will be with me asking not to charge for labor since I'm buying a new car haha.

I'm quoted ~29.5k out the door; 26.8k before tax title etc. ($~, in the land of the high taxes; CA.
    Base DGM sedan
subwoofer, auto dim mirror wit compass and homelink, cargo tray (no idea what that is), security shock sensor (also don tknow what this is), sti short throw shifter, rear spoiler, and foglights.
Price sounds about right? Or am I getting fooled? Just want to be safe.

That is a lot of add ons, but still is really high on price. 26,800 is about where I'd be willing to go OTD on that.

I was a bit skeptical on $29.5 thats why I asked on here. But tax here for me is 8.5% (San Francisco) and then on top of that theres registration license titles etc. So I am estimating about 10% value of car to be added onto the price which is going to be about ~$2600. I'd be super happy if I can get a $26,800 price; but you think thats possible haha? Especially in San Francisco.

Thats not a bad price for Cali. Its a sellers market out on the west coast man no doubt about it, if you can get anywhere even close to invoice I'd do the deal. The parts they will be adding will be genuine Subaru parts, part of every dealers franchise agreement is that they cannot use aftermarket parts, oem only.

    Hi Rexx,
Thanks for the quick replies. I almost bought that car today. But as I was going to the dealer to make the payment and everything; I dropped by another dealer that was half way there. I spent like 3-4 hours there talking to them and finally got a decent price.. or I believe it is.. O_O
Anyways; its $30.3k msrp for a premium with some addons and I got it for a little over $30k Out the door and I'm from San Francisco; the land of 8.5% tax haha. I think I got a good deal?
I think its about $400-500 under invoice

The survey is to ensure you had a good experience and help the manufacturer identify problem dealers. It is HUGE to a guy like me. Basically salesmen's bonus payments are contingent on having a survey score at 90%+ which is hard to do in this business even if you do the right thing by everyone. They really are tough for us since even if you fill out great marks for the salesman, but bad marks for the parking lot/bathroom/service dept/convenience of location etc. it messes up my score. I could literally lose 3k in bonuses by selling some jerk a car if they were to put in all zeros for my scores. Unless your salesman was a complete jerk I'd take care of him on the survey, it will be a good bargaining chip if you ever need anything from that dealership you can say, "hey I took care of you on your survey is there any way you can help me out?"

If I buy a car in one state and live in another, do I pay taxes in the state I bought the car in or my home state.

You pay tax in your home state assuming you have a residence in that state and a lisence in that state. A few exceptions exist, such as military active duty do not pay tax in certain state, religious organizations are tax exempt, etc. But for most of us, you pay tax where you live not where you buy.
