powder 2004 WRX EJ207 swap and general shenanigans

Figured i would start a build thread. I'm swapping an EJ207 after my engine blew a few weeks ago. Have the engine in hand, old engine is out. I'm waiting on parts so doing some little projects here and there. Getting everything cleaned up and ready and swapping parts over, etc.

    Here's pre tear out.

Wiring harness from IA Performance to run AVCS on the JDM motor.

    New Walbro 255.

Ground out the upper lip in my TB with my dremel... just because it was there and i disliked it. Took about 10 mins.

    It's getting there.

Wingless alas. Too bad it took a 50 ton truck to make it happen.

New wiring harness came in today. Got it installed and did some other odds and ends. Put the Perrin turbo inlet on, fresh plugs, did some more cleanup under the timing cover and pulled the belt to swap it for a fresh Gates. Engine porn pics to come once it's all ready to go in. Still have to install the EGT sensor and make sure my Oil Temp Sender will fit under the alt as well. Engine should be able to go in this weekend. I'm pretty stoked.

Well as promised, here are some more pics.

Broke the middle timing cover off because someone tightened the hell out of one of the bolts and spun the embedded nut, so i'm getting a new one tomorrow.

Engine bay mostly cleaned up. Gonna try to do a bit more on the firewall before putting the engine in though.

Are these factory sensors? Oil temp?

Should i buy a new oil pan or will this one be fine? If i bought a new one a new exhaust setup would have to happen unless i could find an EJ207 one.

    That's all for now.

You should be alright for now. Can't tell how long, mines the same way. Just keep an eye on it in case it starts rusting bad enough and watch for bumps in the road if you're low

IMO, you should have swapped out the oil pan with the 2.5L pan while the motor was out of the car. The 2.5L pan (I don't know if this was also added to the later EJ207s) has a much deeper sump to reduce the risk of starvation.

It sits about even with the manifold. I'm not too worried about dinging it. I'll watch the oil pressure to make sure it's up to snuff.

That's not the point. If you plan on cornering hard, watching the oil pressure will only let you know when it's too late. It's better to be preventative.

That information would have been great 4 days ago right after i posted that picture, but you told me the day after i put the engine in, just saying lol. Not trying to be a smart ass, but too little too late, so i will watch it and hope it's ok for now, and if i suspect i should replace it, i will. Or maybe i'll plan to upgrade the turbo and header and change the oil pan at that point. It's indented at most an 1/8th of an inch. I'll see during heavy corning if my oil pressure drops, but i don't plan to beat on it because my trans is still stock.

Well today didn't go as planned. I got my new fuel line in, and had my new oil pressure sender relocation line made. When i went to install the sender, i guess i had over tightened the galley plug adapter and the head snapped off. So now i'm screwed, maybe for my plans for the weekend to get it tuned even.

    Gratuitous engine picture.

So basically i don't have time to wait for a new plug and i don't want a junk brass one that's going to snap off again, so i will take my o2 bung plug and drill and tap a hole in it if i can't find anything. I'll let people know how it turned out.

Ok so it's mostly assembled. I put fluids in it (no coolant) and hooked the battery up. I turned the key to make sure my gauge was working, and the CEL is blinking. Any clue what this is? I have no rear o2 sensor, i put the wideband in that bung. The test connectors are not connected, so that's not the issue and i don't have the flash plug on.

Car seems to be running pretty good. Started tuning it today after getting frustrated with waiting on my friend, so it's all me and the RR and EcuFlash forums i guess.

BTW, the blinking CEL was fixed by unplugging the IAT under the throttle body. The wiring for it is different on the ej207's than the ej205 so i'll have to figure that out and get it rewired.
