What are your impressions of the FA20 vs. the EJ257?

Which do you find more enjoyable on the street, the 2015 WRX or the 2015 WRX STi?

We will do a complete comparison of the 2 cars in about 1-2 weeks. Both cars have about 400-500 miles on them, and we want to get the motors broken in and the first oil change done before we start driving the cars hard.
Right now Rick is driving the WRX, and I am driving the STi. Once the cars are broken in, we will swap cars to do a real world comparison.

So far the EJ is the same as the oil STi, little slow to spool but has great potential. Ricks feedback on the FA is that it spools VERY fast and has a huge amount of tq at low RPM.

This is a great question. I daily drive a 05 Sti and a BRZ with the FA20 so hopefully I can give a bit of insight to this. The EJ257 is superior when you just want to lug the car around. For example, you are driving through a neighborhood, brake to take a turn onto another street, you downshift into 2nd gear putting the engine under 1.5K RPM's. The 257 will effortlessly accelerate, not quickly, but it does not feel stressed in anyway. The FA in the WRX will let you know it does not like this at all, and you feel like you are putting a great stress on it. It will accelerate out of it, but it really does not like being run at higher load and very low RPM. One other situation I notice this is taking off from a stoplight, it feels like in the WRX you do have to keep the rev's slightly higher to provide a smooth start, but I would not say it's an issue, but I do notice it.
Now talking about normal driving above 2K RPM, this is where the WRX really shines. Say you are cruising around 2.5K-3K rpm and need to accelerate, tip in on the accelerator and the WRX instantly surges up to speed, almost overly eager to accelerate, where the STi is not quite as "punchy". The 257 however will feel much stronger in longer pulls, say getting up to freeway speed, you shift up near redline and the STi pulls hard in every gear, where in the WRX, that "punch" is just not there.

    Hope this helps
    Thanks,
    Rick

Interesting comparison. Sounds like the WRX went for usable power as opposed to raw power. I'm interested in driving the FA now just to feel the difference.

That is exactly how I would put it And yes, you need to go drive it, I really think you will like it.

Thanks guys! I took some of my co-workers out for lunch in the WRX today, they were all so impressed by the new interior, the ride and the overall improvements from the last gen. Now I just need to find more time to go eat some miles in it!

    Thanks,
    Rick

The ONLY thing that is catching me up is the retention of the silly VCU in the WRX.

Why not include the more modern hydraulic center diff used in the CVT?
