Make my 3" straight through exhaust quieter

Finally bought a WRB 03 WRX and couldn't be happier. It is completely stock except for an up pipe, down pipe, and fast motors ports 3" exhaust. Needless to say it is a little loud for my taste and my wife hit the floor why she heard it. I've been researching the best way to quiet it down while keeping the performance. I've heard good things about the borla hush and megan racing mufflers while others say adding a resonator would be best. Is it bad to have a 3" full exhaust tapered down to a muffler with a 2.5" inlet? I'm hoping to get some insight from you more experienced Subaru owners out there for the best way to get quieter int he most cost effective way possible.

At your power level, a 2.5" muffler should have no noticeable performance loss. I would recommend the Borla Hush or Maddad Whisper axleback. A resonator may help some, but my understanding is that it will reduce raspiness, but not volume so much.

Borla Hush or Maddad Whisper will certainly quiet it down pretty easily.

Or search for a used stock axleback somewhere.

So I can just toss a stock axle back on from a 3" straight pipe and have no back pressure issues or significant power loss? Thanks for all the responses. I like this place.

Yup.. as long as you still have that tiny stock td04 turbo on there, the exhaust restriction will be in the turbo (aside from the stock downpipe).

I have an OEM 02 WRX axleback for sale for $40.. and an 05 STi axleback for $60 (the bolt holes on the WRX muffler would need to be drilled out to mount to a 3" pipe, the holes on the STi muffler are already drilled out). Shipping will be expensive though, not sure how much.

I hope you're kidding, because I can assure you there was nothing "insult"ing about that comment, but an honest statement...the TD04 is a tiny turbo.

Great for spool on a 2L, and very reliable. For quick spool and drivability I can't think of anything better.

I bought a maddad whisper and its my favorite of the quiet exhausts. Sticker shock on the price though.
    Find a low-mileage one-owner unmodified '04/'05 and you're golden.
