Holy Smokes... I've never made one of these. I should have. I've had the car since 2006 when I got back from Iraq. Kind of a present to myself. Since then it's been a massive money pit... Incredibly fun... and an insane learning project. I've finally got the funds, room, and garage together to be able to turn her into a toy that I can drive to work, and then to the track! Should be a fun close to 400whp e85 beast :D

I've gotten almost all of the parts from WRXPro.com, TiC, and a few from RallySportDirect.

I've been asked to explain the turbo, because the blouch numbering system is totally jacked up... and no one seems to know anything about this turbo. They seem to think that because the number is so low, that it's a small turbo.

It is basically a GT3071r stock location designed to work with stock location inlets but with a billet wheel.

Here's the Blouch Dominator 1.5XT-R info:
Compressor: 71mm Billet
Compressor Inlet: 2.5” or 3.0"
Turbine: 56.5 mm
Center Housing: Water cooled
Bearing System: Full ball bearing

And the Garrett GT3071r info:
Compressor: 71mm
Compressor Inlet: 2.75” or 4.00"
Turbine: 56.5 mm
Center Housing: Water cooled
Bearing System: Full ball bearing

Nice, Kevin. Money pit on steroids. I think it is kind of a built in OCD when it comes to cars / modding, kind of like women and shoes or ridiculously expensive bags (which I will never understand).

Good luck with the build.

Edit:

You may want to add a KillerB oil pickup to the list, for safety and peace of mind. It's a really nice/beefy piece and I am glad I did it for my build.

Also... Why the stock Sti catback? noise? It may hurt your numbers and flow a little bit. But, it may be worth it b/c even my Borla Hush is kinda loud for one of the quietest exhausts on the market.

#6 ·
Yeah STi Catback... for noise.

I haven't heard that many oil pickup failure stories...

#7 ·
Build sounds kinda familiar ;).

I've heard lots of oil pickup failure stories.. of course every single one has been told by the guys at KillerB, so.. you know.

Let me know what your max IDCs come out to be. I went ahead and bought the DW 1300cc injectors because the list price was the same as the 1000s. Then I ended up getting over $100 off by contacting the vendor directly and asking for a discount before I ordered.

I'm interested in your IDCs because I want to compare how my ball bearing 20g stacks up to the Blouch. I have a lack of AVCS, but my EWG should make up for that.. and FMIC vs. TMIC.. but similar builds none the less. Should be one hell of a ride.

Power level should have nothing to do with oil pickup failure. A larger turbo requires more oil, but that should have no effect on the causing the pickup failure. My pickup from my '05 did not have a crack. However, the weld was getting kind of grayish and ashy looking which leads me to believe that the weld was getting closer to failure/cracking.

Not all welds are created equal or even welding material/metal/rod used. My Perrin UPP recently started leaking due to a little crack at the weld and I could not hold over 10-12PSI. Had it rewelded and problem solved. I have had the Perrin UPP since '07 or so, not too long but I guess thats what happens when Perrin out sources products to Asia (probably China).

Needs moar low. That's all.

Why the all season tires? Maybe I misread your post. I dunno what the weather is like over in Denver to be honest, but I doubt it's enough to warrant all seasons over performance tires and cheapo winter/bad season tires.

I actually have summers right now... missed that. Updated :D

#16 ·
Sorry, yes... you're correct. They tend to crack several mm away from the joint, because the steel tube is thin and brittle. You can see from the bluing they overheated the part while brazing it and allowed it to become too brittle by letting it cool too quickly. Piss-poor workmanship.

#17 ·
You folks are the first I've heard of this. I'm going to have to do some Nasioc research, because I don't believe I've seen any high hp cars that I've noticed an aftermarket oil pickup on.

#20 ·
It sounds like this issue is few and far between... I'm not 100% as to whether or not I'm going to do this.

#24 ·
Oil pressure gauge.. I took a corner, and the needle dived about 20psi. I guess I didn't physically see it suck air, but I knew the bubble was there, being forced through my bearings. The ej205 pan is so flat and shallow the oil sloshes side to side when cornering.

#25 · (Edited)
Ya the 2.5L oil pans EJ255/EJ257 are a better design that allow better flow and a better baffle (windage tray), which allow the oil pickup to gain more access to the oil. Also, I believe the KillerB oil pickup also sits a bit lower in the pan again increasing its ability to gather oil.

Pretty much All subarus are made with the crappy oil pickup, so it is a great upgrade IMHO.

Here is a great thread on differences between oil pans:

WRX oil pan vs STi oil pan

If you want the highlights and most of the info skip to post #36, but the entire discussion is a good one.

#26 ·
Back on it...

Installed the KB Botox Bolts the other day. Definitely got rid of the bang between hard shifts. Thank goodness.

#34 ·
what size hot side? (I forget if that's the proper terminology or not)

There is a huge thread over on IWSTI about the xt/xtr turbos. Everybody seems really happy with them.

#32 ·
If anything I think that would make it more likely to fail. If you look at the pics, the tube itself cracks, not the joint. It's just too flimsy in the first place, then they over heat it when brazing, making it even more brittle.

I've got my new pan, pickup, and windage tray sitting on my piano now.. just waiting on my headers to ship from Japan.

I think I might be purchasing RPF1s for next year's summer tires, Kevin. Just thought I'd let you know since you frequently have relations with your RPF1s ;)

So that one thread I sent you wasn't enough to be convincing?

How do you like those Hankook? I'm thinking of picking some up as my tires are toast. Those seem to be my best bet, good ratings and cheap.
They're decent tires. At $100/corner, you can't beat them. There are better tires on the market, but you have to spend more to get them.

Very convincing... Blouch is convinced that on pump I'd be fine... but E85 the pistons would crack.

#40 ·
You and me both :D We'll basically have the same cars... only difference will be the block, and the e85 :D
