    That sucks. I was there a few months ago. I should have done Rods too I only did pistons.

    Yeah rods are the weakest links in these motors aren't they? They should be replaced when doing a build.

    On an EJ255 yeah. The 257s have forged rods already.

    The EJ255 and EJ257 rotating assemblies are exactly the same with he exceptions of a nitride coating on the 09+ STi and the dishing of the hypereutectic cast pistons. The pistons are even the same material. Just cast with a different dishing for the different heads.


    And Mikie... No... The pistons are the weak link. The crank, bearings, rods, wrist pins, rod bolts, etc can all hold up to 500whp. The pistons can only hold up to 400whp. These numbers came out of an article who quoted Crawford.

    At 440whp (on a dynojet) my wrx's pistons blew. I'm totally comfortable with my current 430 (on a superflow) with a stock engine with forged pistons.

    The rods were only a weak point on the EJ205, and even those could hold 350whp. Nitrided crank is a plus, but the crank has always been forged (even on the EJ205). To my knowledge, the ConRods have never been forged on a stock EJ motor But that shouldn't really matter since the ConRods on a Subaru motor are very short compared to most I4s.

    I beg to differ...I had a buddy who had an SZ49'd hybrid 2.5 build...EJ255 with all internals BUT the rods. Sheered 2 of his 4 rods and he was only at 415whp. Had to completely rebuild his engine again.

    Detonation will kill all engines... No matter how well forged. He may have had an overly aggressive tune!
