SUCCESS!!! I finally managed to get my laptop, USB-to-Serial AP v1 dongle to connect to my ECU using ecuEplorer.
First, I uninstalled the dongle drivers and the old copy of ecuExplorer. Then I did the following:
Install
ecuExplorer 3.0.25 (installer version - the zipped version on Cobb forums did not work for me). Remember the install directory. Then install the AP dongle drivers into the same directory. With the ignition OFF, plug in the OBDII port (car) then plug the serial cable end into the USB-Serial port. Next, plug the USB plug into the computer. (NOTE: This time, the USB/Serial adapter did not ask for or display driver loading, etc. I just gave it a few moments to do its thing, then... Boot up ecuExplorer. EcuExplorer should automatically connect to the ECU.
To make life easier than to juggle a million links, I've hosted the files on my webspace. Get the correct files in a zip

I'm glad it works now. EcuExplorer 3.0.25
is AP v1 dongle compatible. Very nice. I hope this helps others too because everything about ecuExplorer and the AP is frustrating, IMO. Now go log it up!
