i just got my wrx,,,,i have around 5k on it and one day we had a little snow and i was fooling around doin donuts and then after that night...my tranny was messed up....NOw everytime i shift from 1st to 2nd my gears grind...i thought it was a sincro...but the dealer is rebuilding my tranny...I think that it shouldn't do that no matter how hard u beat on the car....
Well I talked to the service manager tonight while I was at work. He said the District Guy that comes to look at internals said he would cover it only as a ONE time basis thing. He said that it was abuse that did it, but seeing my situation he basically was just being nice. I said ok, but I wanted a set of RA gears. SO long story short. POWER subaru of Scottsdale is going to Warranty ALL labor, and all parts necessary EXCEPT for the RA Gearset. I just ordered a RA gearset that was Cryo-Treated and Micropolished. I know this isnt bulletproof but Its much better than stock. SO basically the gearset is being overnighted to the dealership at their cost, and I should have my car back on Thursday!!
I'm taking my car in to the dealership on wednesday to get my tranny looked at. My car is a certified pre owned w/ 52k and i've had it for 3k so they don't have a choice but to replace things is how i look at it. The 3rd gear has a grindy feel to it when it's in gear and it's by far the worst out of all the gears. I should get a loaner under warranty also.
The STG2 on the 06 has alot of torque, I'm sure once they see all the mods the district isnt going to cover it. Sucks through but that's the risk people take. If I was going to take a loan out for tranny work I would borrow a little more and get PPG gears so you'll atleast be done and worry free of the tranny.
They already told me that since it's a certified pre-owned, it's covered. If they come back and tell me that it's an abuse issue, i'll see em in court. It hasn't been to the track since i owned it (yet) and it has no mods done to it. The service manager flat out told me that despite horror stories i've heard about subaru dealerships not upholding warranties, he isn't like that. He also said that if they missed that when they certified it, then it was on them not me.
Well, dealership's got it now. They gave me a loaner under warranty, a '06 Forester. We'll see what they have to say about the WRX. They wrote up the transmission thing as a warranty fix and they're changing the oil and checking the brakes for rotor warpage. I told them to call before they fix anything so we'll see how they do. If they f it up, i'm gonna be pissed though. I don't like it when people do something w/o my authorization.
I read a few pages of this and am wondering if there's some correct way to drive a subaru 5sp. I just came form a honda 5sp which I love, and this Scooby is tough to master. I get loads of chatter going into 1st gear from a stop, and also 2nd gear from neutral. It's really pissing me off that I can't figure it out. So, is there a thread explaining how to drive a scooby?
Its probly never going to feel like the honda. Your just going to have to get used to it. Give it time and youll master it. 1st and 2nd piss me off sometimes.
I was just curious if anyone's run that GM syncromesh stuff. I don't want to put anything crappy in there. ANYTHING to allow it to run better/last longer. I don't plan on ragging this out, it needs to be a reliable daily driver to haul me and my crap around and look nice doing it
Where can I find a how-to on flushing the tranny fluid?
Wow someone else with tranny problems. I'm on my 3rd tranny being installed. CV coupler busted and went through the tranny. Anyone ever seen that before???
wuts up guys im new here but I was talking to some kid today about WRX's and sti's and i was interested in the wrx b/c i want to buy one but he kept telling me that the wrx transmissions are shyt and that the sti transmission is soo much more reliable than the WRX. Even a normal driver will go threw 2 tansmissions, why is this. Would you guys recommend getting an STi over an WRX, b/c i didn't want to spend more than $18,700,000 and i know that the STi is faster 6 speed and all that, but besides that whats makes the STi's tranny sooo much better.
a retard will go threw 2 transmissions driving normal. there are plenty of people on here with lots of horsepower that are still on stock tranny and then there are others that are almost stock and blow the tranny. it is all how you drive and how hard you shift and whether or not you launch. that being said the sti transmission is totally different as it can handle a lot more abuse, but then again it is not invincible.
jus trying to get alot of info on the sti and wrx b/c i plan on getting one soon. im doing alot of research on all the different years and the positive and negitives on the car
does any one know if the 07 tranny's built any better then the 06 cause im a little worried about installing any aftermarket parts on my new rex if my gears have a good chance of strippin...i really cant afford to void my waaranty
Hey I just found this sticky (i'm a nooooob) ... Does anyone know of any good dealerships in northern Jersey who may do this warranty work this is the second trans that has failed and my local dealer refuses to do the work.

What happened the first and second time it broke? Odds are it was probaly a "good faith" repair the first time and now they arent going to fix it. Rumor has it that the district rep has to approve/disapprove any tranny repairs. So if it's been fixed and then denied the second time I'm sure a Dis. Rep has been out and has probaly flagged the car in the datebase.
It's worth a shot taking it to another dealership. Any mods on the car? What year?
I've never driven another non-subaru awd or a rwd or anything where the shifter is directly in the tranny so you may be right. I don't have a basis for comparison.
I know for sure it isn't as good as my Mustang for how smooth it shifts, but even my mustang had trouble getting into first at times, and it was more clunky like these transmissions.
I do agree that the tranny isn't the greatest but i'd try redline gear oil and some syncromesh and see how that works, because so far it's been the best thing i've done for my car.
I've got RL lightweight shockproof, pennzoil synchromesh, and castrol hypoy C in mine. I've heard of people using ONLY the RL gera oil, but never GL gear oil with synchromesh.
Just got my 03 and my 4th gear grinds when I shift into it about 80% of the time. if im really slow about it , like shift to neutral, wait 2 seconds, and shift, it only happends 40% of the time. it sucks that its the only gear doing it. I talked to the dealer I bought it from and they said I can take it in as soon as my warranty info shows up in my mailbox. they seem like really cool cats so hopefully it wont be a problem. I have a warranty through Toyota Because I bought it from the toyota dealership.
This may have been mentioned already, but when I am on the freeway and I shift from 5th to 4th to pass a slower car, every single time I get a grind and resistance. I don't know why this is, but I try to be very careful and try to push the clutch to the firewall. Any suggestions?
